What Are The Latest Kitchen Trends In 2010

Published by admin on February 19th, 2010 - in Kitchen Trends

It’s the most important room in the house folks.  I’m talking about the vast majority of buyers as well as home owners who simply want a nice interior.  A clean, updated kitchen offers the biggest return on investment when selling your home and is a great comfort for those who choose to stay put and enjoy it.

Okay, trends don’t change too much from year to year, but I follow these trends as coloring seems to have an annual shift in one area of the kitchen.

First, there seems to be a bit of a trend toward hiding some appliances in drawers, so that they are hidden with the cabinetry design.  Primarily I’m talking about the example of using drawers for dishwashers.  Owners can wash smaller loads in these drawers while saving on energy as well.  I personally am not a big fan of this trend as it comes across to me as a trend that won’t last.  Buyers love the pop of seeing the beautiful stainless steel of the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher.  Time may prove me wrong but I prefer not to hide my high priced stainless appliance.

Let’s start with cabinetry which historically is part of the big three:  cabinets, countertops and appliances.  Cabinet trends in recent years have introduced the distressed look, which I love; it’s different and timeless.  However, it is still a trend, and appears to be on the decline, with the most popular kitchen cabinetry wood remaining cherry and then maple.  I find the least popular is what I have; white cabinets.  Don’t worry.  If these are matched to good counters, lighting, hardware and flooring, they can look and sell just fine.

How about countertops?  Granite is still on top, and for good reason.  It has lots of color options and isn’t nearly as maintenance intensive as the competition says.  This is from my own experience of course.  Quartz and other stones are still on the rise.  The bottom line is that anything stone or marble in texture with good coloring will suffice.  Just get rid of the laminate once and for all.  Do it now while the economy is slow and deals are out there to be had.

Appliances.  Simple.  Stainless steel is still the king.  Black is acceptable, but if you can, upgrade.

Time to discuss flooring.  This is another area that is consistent from year to year.  Wood and tiles of the ceramic and porcelain variety remain the most popular.  If you’re remodeling, I simply stick to the following rule.  If you have hardwoods throughout the main level, stick with that for the kitchen rather than change from hardwood to tile.  Conversely, if the adjacent room to the kitchen is carpet, use tile.  The threshold change flows much better than with two different hard surfaces.

Last would be the least discussed that have a huge impact on every room in a home.  Make sure you use lighting and coloring to enhance a room’s comfort level.  Ignoring these two inexpensive areas is a huge oversight.

These ideas apply to Fairfax Homes, homes for sale in Arlington, VA, and in most metropolitan areas nationally.

Buying Quality Kids Furniture

Published by admin on February 17th, 2010 - in Kids Furniture

Are you in the market for kids’ furniture? You may be tempted to purchase cute furniture that may only suit your child for a few years. This can be a waste of time and money. You may find that you are better off purchasing kids’ furniture from a quality manufacturer.

Ashley furniture has pieces that are specifically designed for use as kids furniture but that still show strong design elements that will grow with your child through the years. Functional pieces such as desks, dressers and armoires are all part of the Ashley furniture collection for children. They combine the durable construction that is so necessary with children’s furniture with clean, simple lines that make them fit well into any home.

Some of the newer designs in kids’ furniture include loft beds. These are a fresh new take on the old bunk bed idea and allow you to save floor space while still having a flexible, multipurpose piece of kids’ furniture. You can find loft beds with different features. Some include a second bed underneath which can be perfect if you have more than one child sharing a room. There are also models with desks and other workspace elements. These beds can travel to school with your child as they can be wonderful for use if you are boarding and have limited living space.

Ashley furniture ranges from pieces that are highly functional to some that are quite whimsical. The Doll House collection features a range of beautiful multi-colored furniture that most girls would love. It still retains its high quality and good design sense and features head and foot boards with shelves and a built in storage area for books.

Kids’ furniture needs to be durable to withstand the amount of punishment that children put their things through. Ashley furniture is made with this in mind. The finishes on all the furniture are designed to be low care. The dark wood finishes on some of their pieces of kids’ furniture can make it easy to keep it looking like new.

Features that you should look for in kids’ furniture include washable handles and other hardware. You should also look for heavy duty construction on drawer glides and high quality hinges as well. All of these things, as well as good solid construction in the products as well will help make sure that your investment is kept looking good for many years to come.

It can pay to shop around for the best deals. Checking online with furniture websites can be a great way to get kids furniture from a manufacturer like Ashley at a better price than you would in stores. Ashley Furniture also works to keep their costs down by eliminating a middleman and deal directly with online retailers as well as conventional retailers.

High quality kids’ furniture can be hard to find, especially if you are trying to steer away from pieces that are too childish. Ashley furniture can be that wonderful balance between whimsy and practicality that you are looking for.

Best Advice For Shopping for Home Electronics

Published by admin on January 25th, 2010 - in Home Electronics

When it comes time to go shopping for any new home electronics product there are innumerable options. Of course when given a lot of choices, the decision as to which to buy can be pretty confounding. Thinking through how the device will be used will help identify the features that an individual really wants and assures they avoid paying for things they won’t ever use. But even then, the number of choices can still be a bit overwhelming, so what other information can help in making the right selection?

Information on the opinions of others can be crucial; both outside experts and current customers. Experts are skilled at assessing home electronics products and know the market while current customers are living the experience.

What do the experts say

The opinion and ratings of “experts” is a starting point. When searching online there are innumerable sites that provide ratings, opinions, and reviews of home electronics products. Unfortunately, to gain these pearls of wisdom sometimes requires a fee. Certainly there are also sites that offer the information for no fee. However, it is sometimes questionable how unbiased the ratings might be as many of the sites posting this information may also be selling similar products. This does not always translate into biased information but consumers need to be aware of the potential.

The credibility of disinterested experts

Certainly some sites offer valuable information. Consumer Reports as an example is independent of any advertisers in order to avoid any bias, making their ratings and reviews of specific products credible. Sites and publications that have no vested interest in making a sale may be an option for finding unbiased information.

Additional information from experts who also market

However, some marketers online do have a strong background in the topic area of certain home electronics products and thus can provide great information to assist consumers in making a choice. In addition, such marketer run sites often allow users to ask questions and interact through blogs and forums providing even more useful information. Consumers merely need to assess the information they read. Articles and reviews that merely provide information, a description of features, and so forth can be useful in making a selection, but information that appears to be a hard sell is probably no more than that.

What do current customers say

Even if the opinions of experts all seem to point toward a particular product and the features of the item match the individuals needs, it can be important to find out how the device performs; thus the opinions of current users can play an important role when shopping.

Real world feedback from forums

Online forums offer consumers the opportunity to provide and review feedback which is unbiased. Even in an open forum type setting however some online marketers will post their feedback. For some it is just another opportunity to sway buyers without their being aware while others offer expert advice. Thus, consumers need to evaluate the reliability of what they read, realizing that both consumers and some internet marketers may be posting there.

So how is a consumer to decide what is reliable feedback, and what is not, in a forum type of situation? Certainly getting to know the participants in a forum can help. As in any setting, gaining a respect for the knowledge of other participants can help in trusting their opinions. Another possibility is to ignore single posts and make note of the trends. Any product can have a dissatisfied customer or an eager internet marketer who makes a post in order to sway readers. However, if there are numerous people posting similar information, whether they are consumers or marketers, it would seem important to heed their messages.

The credible, but limited information from formal surveys

Formal market surveys are another tool that can be helpful in discovering what current customers really think about a particular company or service. They generally don’t provide feedback regarding specific products but do provide a good indication about how current customers feel about the products or services of a particular company.

One example, JD Power, is a company that has been a leader in measuring customer satisfaction in a wide variety of industries for many years. Individuals can go to jdpower.com look at the results of their most recent surveys in areas such as telecommunications providers, home electronics manufacturers, and so forth. Looking at ratings for customer service, reliability, and similar items can certainly shed some light on how current customers view the performance of the products and services of these companies.

Although shopping in the world of home electronics can be a daunting task obtaining information through reviews, ratings, informational articles, and the opinions of both experts and current customers can provide guidance. With a bit of research and a discerning eye, consumers can find the information they need online to make the best choice.

The Best Kids Furniture Ideas

Published by admin on January 24th, 2010 - in Kids Furniture

When investing in furniture for your kids, there are a few things to keep in mind: durability, adaptability and fun. Kids’ interests change quickly and they grow just about as fast, so it’s important to shop smart. Most kids only need a bed, dresser and a desk with a chair.

No matter whether you have a son or a daughter, bedroom themes are really popular. You simply need to begin with good, solid kids’ furniture to base the rest of the design around. The first thing you want to decide on is the theme you will be using to decorate the room. Then, consider the colors. These decisions will affect whether you want to buy dark colored kids bedroom furniture or light colored kids’ bedroom furniture.

Children love color, and purchasing furniture in their favorite color or to match their room colors adds a special touch to a gift. Many types of discount kids furniture come unfinished, so you can paint, stain or finish the item to your taste. Personalizing the furniture with a favorite theme is also a great way to add to the piece, and if you are not artistic stencils or appliqués can be used.

Other kinds of furnishings that children regularly use, particularly for game play and lounging, are chairs. Chairs are generally plush, beanbags, or ultra-soft for added comfort. They’re normally in bright garish colors too. Youngsters seating ought to be particularly comfortable since there exists frequently a long period of time when the child is sitting and playing games, as well as the low-standing chair that is prevalent in youngsters home furniture design today is often a function with the numerous kinds of board games, tea parties, video game marathons, and movie nights that the child will inevitably enjoy in his chair.

The farm theme kid furniture also includes beds and chairs. Show off their beautiful designs by using coverlets and pillows in simple primary colors. (Noisy prints can compete with the designs). Decorate, instead, with stuffed animals. For example, if your set of farm theme kid furniture includes a sweet rocking chair, prop a fluffy stuffed sheep or cow over its hand rest.

Futon beds are great because they begin as a couch, creating a comfortable space for parent and child(ren) to cuddle around a book. Later they easily unfold into a twin or double bed. Kids futons are relatively inexpensive because, given the kid’s light weight, it is not necessary to invest in an expensive mattress. Kids sleep soundly on the floor, so a cotton mattress will do just fine.

Children will generally pick the brightest and boldest colors; this combined with distinct shapes help to kindle the learning process. Neutral accented with bright tinges, walls covered in floral, checks or stripes are great for backdrops. Try to do your walls in a neutral and the accents in one bold color, such as white walls and pink children’s bedding, area rug, curtains and cushions.

The main items of furniture that makes up a kids room are the bed, dresser, night stand, table and chair set, a book shelf etc. and these have to be purchased to complement each other while keeping in mind that kids grow fast and what is bought should last for a reasonable time span or be adaptable in the long run. Another thing to be borne in mind is not to buy too many pieces that would hinder the child s free movement in its room since they are constantly moving around and need a lot of space.

Thus you can go for the variety of other paint bedroom ideas which will make the room interesting and will also enhance the creativity of your child. Besides wall decor and paint the furniture and accessories also plays a major role while designing your kids bedroom.

The furniture should go well with the overall design and should be conductive for both play and organization. Safety features should also be given due consideration. So just do a brainstorming session and make your kids bedroom interesting and colorful.

Question by Dirtt: What do you know about Thai made home furnishings? And which areas are known for this?
I’ve come across numerous furniture and home furnishings that were claimed to be ‘Made in Thailand’ with obvious mark-ups near where I live. I’d like to seek out authentic and more unusual pieces. Perhaps antiques. Are certain regions of the country known for this?

And is it frowned upon to make inquiries if something is not or not obviously for sale?

I thank you in advance for your opinions and advice

Chiang Mai in the north is a handcraft center and there are many furniture factoires in the area… I live not too far from CM and the border town of Mae Sot and much of the teakwood furniture that is sold in CM also comes from Burma – it enters Thailand from Mae Sot.. So, prices for this type of furniture should be most reasonable there and you will find some antiques in Mae Sot as well, but rarely furniture – - wood does not last too long here and real antiques are not easy to find – though reproductions abound.. If you are doing this for business, you can figure an extra 40% on top of the cost of purchase which will include shipping and customs brokers fee.. You might also consider, especially on a first shipment that US Customs [ I assume US? - sorry if not ] might cut off some legs or whatever in a search for drugs.. You should also consider maximizing your profit by bringing in other things as well that are smaller, less expensive, sell quicker and do not take up as much room for shipping.. Yes, I used to import from Thailand and now am retired here.. feel free to contact me for more info if you need specific help – kenk2424@yahoo.com.. best ken

Looking For Modern Kitchen Trends in 2011?

Published by admin on January 18th, 2010 - in Kitchen Trends

The kitchen is where it’s at when it comes to determining the quality and style of a home. Families spend more and more time in kitchens, incorporating them into offices, sitting rooms and general gathering places.

Because of the value of a quality, modern and upscale kitchen, people are opting to spend extra time designing their kitchen when building their home or remodeling their kitchens with careful detail.

What are some of the top trends in modern kitchen trends?

1. Stainless-Steel Appliances – The look of stainless-steel adds a sophisticated and rich feel to a kitchen, no matter what the style you are going for. Stainless-steel is also practical in that it’s easy to clean, and some come with a special fingerprint-resistant steel. The surface is easily sanitized too and when wiped down becomes smooth, sleek and shiny. With stainless-steel, color never fades and it is rust-proof. Stainless steel is also non-porous so it resists bacteria and germs more effectively than wood or plastic surfaces, such as those used on the interior of standard refrigerators or a stand refrigerator’s door handles or dispensers. Last, stainless steel doesn’t affect the flavor of foods due to the fact it does not retain germs.  All of this can account for why restaurants and commercial kitchens have been using stainless steel appliances for so long.

2. Work Areas – Building in small offices or work areas within the kitchen is still a popular trend. Having a desk with a computer in a small nook within your kitchen can help you look up recipes, finish work while waiting for food to cook, allow your children to do their homework while you are busy in the kitchen, and more. Such workstations can be integrated into almost any kitchen. You can also have a professional design your workstation into your kitchen’s layout. Many opt to have a custom-built desk at one end of the kitchen, which provides as an anchor. Integrating numerous drawers, a phone, and outlets along with wireless connections will keep this area fully prepared.

3.Warming Drawers – Many of today’s modern homes have warming drawers. Warming drawers are nice alternatives to microwave ovens. If your family eats at different times, using a warming drawer is more energy efficient and provides a way to keep meals of the same quality as when you first cooked them. Many quality warming drawers have built-in moisture controls which keeps your food from drying out after being rewarmed. In using a warming drawer, you are also using less energy than that of an oven. Warming drawers use between 450 and 600 watts while an oven takes approximately 2000 watts. The heating elements in a warming oven are thermostatically controlled so they are on only part of the time. Most foods must be kept above 140 degrees to make sure they don’t spoil. Warming drawers are sold in widths of 27 and 30 inches, which match the standard widths of kitchen cabinets and other appliances. This makes them easy to install. A 27 and 30 inch model will fit four 11-inch plates and a 24-inch model should hold up to four 9-inch plates. A warming drawer, when closed, looks like any other drawer under the countertop. Controls are hidden behind the front cover. You can have your warming drawer mounted under the oven for an integrated look as well.

4. Technology In The Kitchen – Many folks are also opting for popular electronic items to be installed in their kitchens. Items include wall-mount televisions, sound systems and computer monitors. Watching television while cooking and baking, helps pass away the time. Or maybe you want to watch your favorite cooking channel while trying your hand at a new dish. For those of you who live out of your kitchen, bringing everything together within it, just makes sense.

5. Installing Eco-Friendly Products – There are so many new products today that one can use in their kitchen that is ‘green’ or eco-friendly. This has become a popular trend whether it is eco-friendly cabinetry made of bamboo or wheatboard or the fact that the homeowner uses water-conserving faucets and Energy Star appliances. In regards to countertops, there are other products out there beyond standard marble and granite – they include IceStone, a mix of recycled glass and concrete. For floors, there are choices from bamboo and cork to just plain concrete – all nice replacements to linoleum.

Any of these choices or all of them will help bring your kitchen up to date with some of the latest trends that are not only smart and beautiful, but practical and a worthy investment.
